Web Analytics revolves around using data to make recommendations on changing a website. A few vague questions we get from the business are what is going on in my site, what can I do to improve conversion, how can I sell more to my customers, etc. Web Analytics is about answering all those questions by looking at data and website usage and making recommendations to help the website meet its desired goals.
Web Analytics revolves around looking at basic metrics using existing standard reports (in tools such as Google Analytics or Omniture Sitecatalyst), segmenting data (New vs. Return, Product-Level, Demographic or Behavioral Segmentation) and seeing if there are any segment specific trends and looking across the funnel (Landing Pages, Browse Layer, Product Selection Pages, Shopping Cart, Checkout) and seeing which area is / isn't doing well. Once we see a high-level trend, going deep-into it with a hypothesis and ensuring the data validates or invalidates the hypothesis. Where the trend is not clear or if the business needs more proof of it, web analytics practitioners have the powerful weapon of A/B or MVT Tests. Once the test or the analysis is conclusive and the business is convinced of it, go ahead and get the dollars in.
